Aide: Gingrich can’t win with Romney in the race
MESA, Ariz. — Newt Gingrich expects Rick Santorum will win Tuesday’s primary in Michigan — and that’s not such a bad thing for his campaign, a top Gingrich aide said Wednesday. “For a Gingrich candidacy to advance to Tampa, Mitt Romney cannot be in the race,” said R.C. Hammond, Gingrich’s spokesman. Hammond spoke to reporters on Wednesday as the GOP candidates were preparing to take the stage for a CNN debate, and said Gingrich needed to do away with the dishonest attacks Romney was bringing into the campaign before it could focus on winning. “Whatever means we can use that are our advantage to get rid of Mitt Romney, and if that means we have Rick Santorum as the one who exposes him for being a flawed candidate, we’re happy to have that happen,” he said.
