Virginia, Maryland move into national political spotlight

Posted by on Sunday, 8 January, 2012

Steve Contorno Examiner Staff Writer The road to the presidency and the balance of the U.S. Senate both run through Virginia in 2012 while the future of the Democratic Party could take shape in neighboring Maryland in a make-or-break year for Gov. Martin O’Malley. Virginia especially will be a political battleground in 2012, crucial to President Obama’s re-election hopes. Obama in 2008 became the first Democratic presidential candidate in nearly half a century to win… examinerpolitics.com

Dem. Official Ousted for Using Racial Slur to Describe Black Kids, AP Fails to Identify His Party

Posted by on Wednesday, 12 October, 2011

So here you have some public official caught on film casually using the word “nigger” to describe black children , he’s forced to resign as county commissioner, and this is all the information the Associated Press  passes along: WEDOWEE, Alabama — A county commissioner from east Alabama has resigned after being videotaped using a racial slur to describe black children. Birmingham television station WBRC reports that longtime Randolph County Commissioner Thomas “June” Waldrep submitted his resignation on Tuesday. In a letter, the 80-year-old Waldrop apologized for anything he said that was offensive. A video posted on Youtube shows Waldrep repeatedly using a racial slur to refer to black children attending a Boys and Girls Club. Waldrep doesn’t seem to know he is being recorded in the video. In his resignation, Waldrep says he hopes his actions through the years spoke louder than his words. Gee, isn’t something missing? And it’s not a fluke, either, because you can read various versions of the story here , here , and here and there’s still a little something missing. In fact, after a good faith search on my part, this something that’s missing couldn’t be found in any news story on the Web. We had to confirm Waldrep was a Democrat through a Lexis/Nexis search. And does anyone want to bet money that if this guy were a Republican this wouldn’t be a bigger story … especially when there’s video . As a quick side note, I would just like to add that hearing some lowlife use the N-word is horrific enough in any context, but hearing it used casually like this puts a chill straight up my spine.

Breaking News Misidentifies Congressman at Center of Sex Scandal as GOP

Posted by on Saturday, 23 July, 2011

From Breaking News moments ago: Congressman Wu is a Democrat. Wu is currently embroiled in allegations of an “ unwanted sexual encounter .” Not long after they deleted their Tweet and posted a new update, identical to the last except for the proper party identification: Immediately identifying the politician in question as a Republican: bias or honest mistake?

John Edwards charged in felony indictment

Posted by on Friday, 3 June, 2011

A federal grand jury has indicted two-time presidential candidate John Edwards over massive sums of money spent to keep his mistress in hiding during the peak of his 2008 campaign for the White House. The case of USA v. Johnny Reid Edwards contains six counts, including conspiracy, four counts of illegal campaign contributions and one count of false statements. The indictment was returned in the Middle District of North Carolina Friday. An Edwards spokeswoman said she wasn’t aware of the filing and declined immediate comment. The indictment is the culmination of a federal investigation that lasted more than two years and scoured through… examinerpolitics.com

CBS poll puts Obama at 45% job approval

Posted by on Thursday, 16 September, 2010

Seven-point Democrat advantage in sample. CBS finds that Barack Obama’s job approval numbers are “mixed,” but that has more to do with the usual CBS sampling follies than it does with any actual rebound in Obama’s numbers.  Obama gets a 45/47 in their latest survey of registered voters, but does worse on the issues, especially the issue that concerns Americans Read this post

Shocka – NOT: Al-Qaeda on Capitol Hill: Congressional Muslim Staffers Association Embraces Islamic Radicals and Terrorists

Posted by on Thursday, 16 September, 2010

Big Peace When a report challenging our national security policy of ignoring Islamic supremacism through Islamic law, “Shariah: The Threat to America,” was released during a Capitol Hill press conference on Wednesday (disclosure: I was one of the co-authors of the report), among the chief critics were representatives from the Congressional Muslim Staffers Association (CMSA). This group, which has been briefing both Democrat and Republican congressional leadership in recent months that there is nothing inherently violent in Islamic law, has a very poor history of embracing Islamic radicals and even Al-Qaeda terrorists.[ More ] Think Yemeni cleric Anwar al-Awlaki….long time readers of Jawa will not be surprised by this.

Thinking about the Buckley rule

Posted by on Thursday, 16 September, 2010

Scott We have received an avalanche of email messages responding to our dust-up with Mark Levin over the candidacy of Christine O’Donnell in Delaware and regarding our comments on Rush’s suspension of the Buckley rule in favor of the Limbaugh Rule . Yesterday Rush crowed that the Limbaugh Rule rules the day . Some readers have written to express their support, while some have written to express their disagreement with us. Some correspondents have condemned us as liberals, as RINOs, even as members of what Angelo Codevilla calls “America’s ruling class.” Speaking for myself, I would like to borrow the words of the politician who asserted that he was conservative before conservative was cool. I think the emergence of the Tea Party is the best thing that has happened in American politics in a long time. Foremost among the tasks confronting us is the restoration of the principles of limited government. The Tea Party movement gets at the roots of our current crisis of constitutionalism. Some readers have written to announce that they will no longer be visiting our site. Thanks to the blog format, we are relieved of the necessity of canceling their subscription, or responding in the style of the late, great Mr. Buckley: Cancel Your Own Goddam Subscription . Some readers have written to point out that Buckley himself did not follow the Buckley rule that conservatives should support the rightwardmost viable candidate. They point to Buckley’s candidacy for mayor of New York in 1965. The Buckley rule is a rule of thumb, not a law or first principle. Under certain circumstances it can yield to higher priorities, such as the need to punish a wayward member of your own party in the interest of party discipline or principle. One thinks here of Buckley’s support of Joe Lieberman against Lowell Weicker. When Lieberman challenged the nominally Republican Weicker for the Senate in 1988, National Review ran an article raising the rhetorical question: “Does Lowell Weicker Make You Sick?” In her obituary of Buckley, Ann Coulter recalled : Buckley started a political action committee to support Lieberman, explaining, “We want to pass the word that it’s OK to vote for the other guy or stay at home.” The good thing about Lieberman, Buckley said, was that he “doesn’t have the tendency of appalling you every time he opens his mouth.” Buckley’s opponents in the New York mayoralty race were the nominally Republican John Lindsay and the traditional Democrat Abe Beame. As between Lindsay and Beame, there was no righwardmost candidate. Both Lindsay and Beame were liberals. Buckley devotes a large portion of The Unmaking of a Mayor to his analysis of Lindsay’s liberalism. Buckley’s 1965 candidacy does not contradict his rule of thumb. Circumstances dictate the applicability or not of the Buckley rule. We thought it applied in Delaware in 2010 for a variety of reasons. I understand those who disagree. The question is one of judgment that is necessarily subject to reasonable disagreement. Having vanquished Mike Castle, Christine O’Donnell has shaken up the Republican establishment. By itself this is a good thing. She now faces off against Democrat Chris Coons. Coons is the guy who once proudly held himself out as “the bearded Marxist.” O’Donnell is certainly the rightwardmost candidate in the race. Support her here . If she proves to be viable, as I can only hope she does, I will be the first to say I was wrong. PAUL adds: I’ll be the second, although I should be the first, since I’m the one who has been writing about the Delaware race since before it was on most people’s radar. It’s difficult to believe that we have regular readers who think we’re part of the “ruling class.” If we do, I can’t blame them if they stop reading us. Finally, the Limbaugh rule is not as all conquering as Rush supposes. It didn’t prevail in California, where Carly Fiorina defeated Chuck DeVore (who finished a third with 20 percent of the vote) or in Washington where Dino Rossi trounced Clint Didier. If the Limbaugh rule had prevailed in these states, I doubt the Republicans would have any real shot at winning those Senate seats. The Tea Party movement has picked up political steam since these races (a good thing in many ways, as Scott says). But even on Tuesday night, the Limbaugh rule did not prevail in New Hampshire, where Ovide Lamontagne, who was probably the rightward most candidate and was endorsed by the Tea Party, fell slightly short of the Senate nomination (thereby significantly increasing the odds that this seat will remain Republican). And in Maryland, Brian Murphy, the rightward most candidate and endorsed by Sarah Palin, picked up only one of every four ballots in his race against Bob Ehrlich for the gubernatorial nomination. The world remains a stubbornly complicated place.

GOP Castle donors unsure about O’Donnell

Posted by on Wednesday, 15 September, 2010

At least two GOP senators who donated to Rep. Mike Castle’s (R-Del.) failed primary bid against Tea Party candidate Christine O’Donnell said Wednesday morning they were unsure whether they would contribute to O’Donnell’s long-shot general election bid. Centrist Sen. Susan Collins of Maine and conservative Sen. Thad Cochran of Mississippi both said they were surprised by O’Donnell’s six-point margin of victory over Castle. O’Donnell faces Democrat Chris Coons in the November election, and polls show the prospect has dimmed Republican hopes of retaking control of the Senate. Collins and Cochran each contributed $10,000 to Castle’s campaign. “I don’t know her at all,” Collins said of O’Donnell. “I was a strong supporter of Mike Castle, and I’m disappointed he did not prevail. This came as such a surprise to me. I really don’t know her yet, so it’s premature for me to make that decision. … Certainly had Mike Castle won, I was very optimistic that we would pick up the Delaware seat. I am no expert on Delaware politics, but friends of mine tell me that prospect is now much more difficult.” See more here: GOP Castle donors unsure about O’Donnell Original post: GOP Castle donors unsure about O’Donnell

Top Democrat Tells German Newspaper: Americans Don’t Like Obama Because They’re Racists

Posted by on Wednesday, 15 September, 2010

Obama is the worst jobs president since the Great Depression. The Obama-Pelosi economic plan resulted in a cumulative 7.5 million jobs deficit . By every objective measure the democrat’s Trillion dollar stimulus bomb was a complete disaster. Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi tripled the national deficit last year by nearly a trillion dollars – something unheard of in our nation’s history. After an unheard of record deficit last year of $1.4 Trillion the economy is on track to experience a $1.3 Trillion deficit this year. Instead of focusing on the economy the past two years the radicals in Washington beat up on business and rammed through an unpopular nationalized health care entitlement program. Despite these facts, democrats continue to believe Americans don’t like Obama because they are racists. Rep. John Lewis told a German newspaper that Americans don’t like Obma’s radical agenda because – “People cannot get used to the idea that a person of color is president of the United States.” This is getting old. Doug Ross uncovered this outrageous interview at Der Spiegel : SPIEGEL: Were you not surprised how quickly the political mood changed in the US? Lewis: No. It’s the first time in the history of the country that we have a black president. You have to understand that there are some people in our society that say he is not one of us. He may be down in the polls right now, but he will come back. Just like Bill Clinton came back. He’s going to campaign his heart out… SPIEGEL: But the question is whether Washington would function better if the Republicans had a majority in either the Senate or the House. Would that not make them less inclined to be obstructionist? Lewis: No. I think the Republican Party is going to the extreme. If it continues on the path it’s on, it will continue to be a minority party for many years to come … SPIEGEL: Is there any difference between the backlash against President Bill Clinton in the 1994 midterm elections and the backlash against Obama we are seeing now? Lewis: I don’t see a vast difference. A lot of people on the other side didn’t like Bill Clinton for different reasons, and they tried to destroy him. But he hung in. SPIEGEL: The radicalization of the right, in other words, isn’t necessarily due to the US having a black president for the first time ever? Lewis: In some quarters, it’s true, people cannot get used to the idea that a person of color is president of the United States.
