Media Matters Digs In Its Heels As Criticism Over Antisemitism Increases

Posted by on Monday, 6 February, 2012

Not all George Soros-funded groups are alike. Both Center For American Progress (CAP) and the “media watchdog” it helped to create, Media Matters for America (MMFA), have been roundly criticized for their use of anti-Semitic memes. Most recently the focus has been on the use of the term “Israel-firster” a term meant to portray Jewish Americans as somehow less loyal to the United States than other religious groups. While CAP seems to have taken the charges to heart, and is seeking to change its ways, the Obama/Soros-”firsters” at MMFA are digging in their heels. This dual-loyalty charge, like most anti-Semitic claims, is even more abhorrent because it directly contradicts Jewish Law: Seek the peace of the city where I have exiled you and pray for it to the Lord, for in its peace you shall have peace. – Jeremiah Chapter 29:7 And it is nothing new: the dual-loyalty charge made by these progressive groups have been around since biblical times, it was what caused enslavement of the Israelites by Egypt. A new king arose over Egypt, who did not know about Joseph. He said to his people, “Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more numerous and stronger than we are. Get ready, let us deal shrewdly with them, lest they increase, and a war befall us, and they join our enemies and depart from the land.” – Exodus Chapter 1:8-10 Jewish sources from all over the political spectrum have denounced the CAP and MMFA use of Antisemitism in their political writing.  Not many people were surprised when the Simon Wiesenthal Center denounced the use of the dual loyalty term , but when the very progressive magazine, The Tablet condemned CAP and MMFA for its use, eyebrows were raised. The root of this problem is not a twenty-something blogger writing something stupid on the Internet. Rather, it is that anti-Semitic rhetoric and logic are being protected and justified by those who are supposed to be gatekeepers. These people, often in the service of their larger political aims, are willing to apologize for or ignore what is obviously Jew-baiting and Jew-hatred….. …This isn’t how the world works. Americans’ sensitivity to racist language directed at African-Americans has not made Americans insensitive to “real” anti-black racism. Rather it has made us scrupulous about our language, and subsequently our beliefs and practices have come to reflect, if not wholly fulfill, the promises embodied in this country’s founding documents. What makes people insensitive to racism is when American political and intellectual elites refuse to confront racist language. The use of phrases like “Israel Firster” and “dual loyalist” that are based on anti-Semitic tropes is anti-Semitic. So is the belief that Jews fan the flames of hatred for discussing the opinions of those who hate them CAP has denounced the term and instituted “oversight” changes — while the staffer who used “Israel firster” on his Twitter account apologized, deleted the tweets and has since left CAP for another group. The Wiesenthal Center has applauded CAP for making the changes. The Anti-Defamation League also said in a written statement that the Center for American Progress “ took the matter seriously and understood the anti-Semitic nature of raising dual-loyalty canards.” The ADL praised CAP for taking “ concrete steps” to address the problem. But as for Media Matters and its “Israel-firster” user, MJ Rosenberg, the talons are out.  These pages have provided many examples over the years how Rosenberg accuses American Jews of dual loyalty with the term Israel-firsters ), or how he claims the  “evil Zionist lobby” controls both the media and the U.S. foreign policy . Rosenberg even uses the term “neo-con” as a slang pejorative term for Jews who are politically conservative. Rosenberg accuses those “Israel-firster” “neo-cons” of everything from pushing the US into the war with Iraq and now trying to manipulate the US into a war with Iran . Rosenberg is not backing down.  Ever since the controversy began to build he has dug in his heals, Tweeting hatred and claiming that those who criticize the use of the term are just trying to silence his ‘progressive Jewish voice.’ Here are just a few of his tweets from the past few days: Gee, I thought the article was about Obama, not the US. Obama is so wrong about so many things like taxes, Obamacare etc., along with the Middle East, what does that have to do with commentary or Netanyahu?—Wait does that make MJ Rosenberg an “Obama-firster?” I suppose what Media Matters is now claiming if they stop including Antisemitism in their prose, the US will go to war with Iran. Is he really is claiming that no one cared about the Holocaust until the Six-Day-War when Jews could begin to exploit it to protect Israel? I will disagree with anybody who calls Media Matters for America’s MJ Rosenberg a “self-hating Jew.” People who have met him in person have told me that he is not a self-hater–in fact he is a borderline narcissist. The correct description for MJ Rosenberg is a “Jew who opposes politically-conservative Jews.”  This characterization has nothing to do with his unfavorable feelings toward Israel as there is a difference between criticizing Israeli policy and Antisemitism. When one uses anti-Semitic stereotypes in his criticism of policy (like Rosenberg) it crosses the line and becomes antisemitism. The MMFA commentator has thrown out so much hatred, he would make the authors of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion proud. And the fact that Rosenberg’s hatred is condoned and paid for by MMFA, a group described as a “core institution” of the Democrat party , and spews such antisemitism particularly disturbing (and frightening). Rosenberg’s hatred, whether it really exists in his heart or whether he is just prostituting himself for the progressive MMFA doesn’t really matter, but it is an indication of his lack of common sense. Now that CAP, after receiving criticism from fellow progressives, has fixed the problem all eyes are on Rosenberg and MMFA.  One would think that someone of intelligence would read the tea leaves and at least lie low for a while, but not Rosenberg. This proves that MJ Rosenberg’s problem not an abundance of intelligence, just an abundance of hatred.

Sewage Stalemate In Samaria

Posted by on Sunday, 5 February, 2012

(John Hinderaker) It seems sewage has been much in the news lately, from perhaps the most epic of the epic greenfails that Steve has documented to the appalling personal hygiene of the Occupiers. Today’s sewage story comes from Samaria, where the Israelis are trying to provide proper sewage disposal in twenty Arab villages, and the Arabs want nothing to do with it: Swirling in the strikingly green valley below the southern Samaria community of Nofim is a rambling stream amid grass and trees – filled with dangerous quantities of sewage. A subterranean sewage pipe connects to the underbellies of four of the five surrounding settlements – Nofim, Yakir, Etz Ephraim and Sha’arei Tikva – and will within a few months also connect to that of Ma’aleh Shomron, bringing all of the effluent to a treatment facility in Eliyahu. Despite Israeli offers to connect the 22 surrounding Palestinian villages to the same pipe, all but one of them refused the proposal, Environmental Protection Ministry and Shomron Regional Council officials explained during an exclusive tour of the area on Thursday. Instead, their sewage flows into the aquifer below and ends up directly in the stream, according to the officials. “That’s a testament to the fact that we are doing everything we can to prevent pollution in Judea and Samaria, but nevertheless, the Palestinians refuse to cooperate,” Environmental Protection Minister Gilad Erdan told The Jerusalem Post during the tour. Why won’t the Palestinians allow Israel to help with their sewage? Maybe they just like things the traditional way; the only alternative explanation is political: “a third official told the Post he suspected that the local Palestinian governments were unwilling to connect their villages due to ‘political reasons’ – simply ‘because they don’t want to recognize Israel as a presence in the area.’” So they would rather swim in their own sewage than accept help from the Israelis. I found this comment interesting: Erdan expressed hope that donor countries would agree to only continue giving the villages financial support if they agree to connect to the sewage pipeline. The Palestinians “receive more foreign aid per head of population than any other group of people in the world.” So they are too proud to let the Israelis dispose of their sewage, but not too proud to subsist on the charity of the European Union and other “donor countries,” including the United States.

Palestinian Authority TV Praises Fogel Family Murderers

Posted by on Wednesday, 1 February, 2012

Almost a year ago, two Palestinians broke into the home of Udi and Ruth Fogel. Inside, they massacred the couple along with three of their children. Recently, on Palestinian Authority TV, the family of one of the killers praised him as ‘a hero’ and ‘a legend’: One other thing I found most disturbing (apart from the senseless, brutal murders) is the utter ignorance expressed in comments at Youtube.com. The antisemitism is appalling and their knowledge (or lack of) about Islam is laughable. Many there are excusing and justifying the murders. BigPeace notes that, while he has made many statements criticizing Israeli settlers in Jerusalem, Barack “Friend of Israel” Obama has not issued any statement condemning the slaughter of the Fogel Family or Palestine for praising murderers.

Thousands Of Muslims Protest Against Islamists

Posted by on Wednesday, 28 December, 2011

Just kidding! Actually, it was thousands of Israelis protesting ultra-Orthodox Extremist Jews : THOUSANDS of Israelis gathered last night to protest against ultra-Orthodox extremists whose campaign for gender segregation has erupted into verbal and physical abuse against women. Police said about 3000 people showed up in the town of Beit Shemesh, with “several hundred” police supervising. There were no clashes between participants and ultra-Orthodox residents who have recently been filmed spitting at a woman and verbally harassing an eight-year-old girl. Extremism in any society should be exposed and protested. So, its good to see Israeli citizens taking a stand against these intolerant bigots. If only every faith would distance themselves and shame the radicals among them.

HonestReporting Names the UK Guardian Winner of the Dishonest Reporting Award

Posted by on Monday, 19 December, 2011

HonestReporting is a UK-based organization devoted to monitoring and criticizing media bias in Middle East coverage. It was founded in 2000, after the New York Times ran a photo of a bloodied youth whom it mis-identified as a Palestinian being beaten by Israeli soldiers. In fact, he was a Jewish American student who had been dragged out of a taxi by a Palestinian mob and was rescued by Israeli soldiers. The Times photo, unfortunately, became incorporated into official Arab propaganda about Israeli atrocities. However, it inspired a new generation of media activists to stand up to bias in the “newspaper of record” and elsewhere. Since then, HonestReporting has evolved into a multi-faceted institution, offering not only critiques of biased reporting across a variety of media, but tools for people to take up the critique themselves. Each year, HonestReporting invites its readers to participate in the selection of the recipient of the Dishonest Reporting Award. And in 2011, the winner was the Guardian – in a “landslide .” The left-leaning UK daily won for a variety of outrages, including an antisemitic response to the release of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, in which a columnist (who later apologized) blasted Israel for the “obscene idea that Israeli lives are more important than Palestinian lives.” In fact, the high number of Palestinian terrorists exchanged for a single innocent Israel soldier had been at the insistence of the terror group Hamas, not the Israeli government. Even more outrageously, the Guardian ’s bias in Middle East coverage seeped into its coverage of local events. In reporting on the riots that consumed several cities across the UK last summer, for example, the newspaper avoided mentioning the ethnicity of the rioters, except to mention that several religious Jews had “gathered to watch and jeer at police.” The Guardian is admired by reporters worldwide, and sets the editorial tone for journalists across the English-speaking media. Therefore, its receipt of the Dishonest Reporting Award is particularly noteworthy. And so, too, is the example that HonestReporting has set for those who wish to stand up to media bias in the free world, wherever it occurs and on whatever subject.

Gingrich and the Imaginary Palestinians

Posted by on Monday, 12 December, 2011

Presidential candidate Newt Gingrich has caused something of a storm with his latest statements on foreign policy. Earlier in the week he threw the leftist MSM into a bit of a tizzy with his promise to appoint John Bolton to head up the State Department. Now, in a bit leaked from an interview with The Jewish Channel, Gingrich has once again stepped on a sacred cow by calling the Palestinians an “ invented people .” This has, predictably, drawn the ire of all sorts of people, sending the press scurrying around for outraged statements from Arabs and the politicians who support them. In the hundreds of news articles that have been written on that short blurb none that I managed to see actually spoke to any historians. Most quoted various Palestinians saying Gingrich is wrong, but without bringing any real arguments to the table. Several articles did make an effort to mention some history as well as comment that, being the Jewish Sabbath in Israel, that no Israeli politicians were available for comment; though this seems to have been a rare occurrence of actual journalism . Overall, this was an excellent chance for the press to actually take a look at the “accepted” story and compare Gingrich’s statements to the historical record. The only problem with that is that most likely they would come up with the fact that he is right. Before 1948 the only Palestinians were the Jews living in what is now Israel. There was never an Arab state in the area, the times it was ruled by Muslims it was always a provincial backwater, an after thought in the greater scheme of things. For those interested in understanding the history of Jews and Arabs in the region read From Time Immemorial by Joan Peters, a thorough and painstakingly researched and fully annotated history of the conflict.

"Be Careful That Your Kids Don’t Start Thinking Hanukkah Lasts 20 Nights Instead Of Eight"

Posted by on Friday, 9 December, 2011

Haw haw! Yeah! We wouldn’t want the kids to mistake this Joo festival for Ramadan! One would hope he was only referring to the practice of giving a gift on each day of Hannukah, not the length of the holiday. After all, that’s what you should be teaching your kids about Hannukah, getting the booty. Right? Obama made this bizarre joke during a White House Hannukkah celebration . Obama, first lady Michelle Obama and Vice President Joe Biden convened a Hanukkah celebration at the White House Thursday in an early celebration of the Jewish Festival of Lights. Hanukkah begins at sunset on Dec. 20. Obama joked that everyone needs to be “careful that your kids don’t start thinking Hanukkah lasts 20 nights instead of eight.” He then proceeded to light all eight nine candles on the menorah. Obama also added of the dinner, “we never need an excuse for a good party.” Party like its 165 BC! Or to go golfing.
