Ignorance Is Bliss AND Painful
I went to the US Consulate this week to take care of certain family business. It was a thoroughly unpleasant experience. I think it is ironic that two days after my extremely unpleasant experience at the consulate, State Department Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland refused to say what the capital of Israel is. It was ironic because anyone who visits the consulate knows that the US’s position on Jerusalem is in perfect alignment with that of Israel’s worst enemies. She ends with this, think about it [emphasis mine]: Israelis who live in Jerusalem and need US consular services are required to go to the consulate in Jerusalem. You can’t just go to Tel Aviv to avoid the unpleasantness. This again is due to the fact that the US does not recognize ANY Israeli sovereignty over Jerusalem. From the State Department’s perspective, people who live in Jerusalem — even in Arnona and Rehavia and Ein Kerem etc. — live in a DIFFERENT COUNTRY from people who live in Tel Aviv and Netanya. We can no more receive services from the embassy in Tel Aviv than we can receive services from the embassy in Amman . I will be writing more about the US’s adversarial treatment of Israel as embodied in its treatment of Jerusalem in next week’s Jerusalem Post column. But suffice it to say here that Victoria Nuland’s statement to AP reporter Matt Lee, (posted below in case you missed it), is a true depiction of America’s policy on Jerusalem – and though it, on Israel. (Scott Johnson) Nicky Larkin is an Irish filmmaker who was until recently a member of the hate-Israel left — and Ireland is a land where that hatred runs deep. Having been outraged by Israel’s 2008 operation in Gaza, Larkin applied for a grant to make a film exposing the ruthlessness of Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians. The Irish Arts Council obliged, and Larkin went off to Israel and the West Bank to make his film. What he saw, however, persuaded him that he had Israel wrong. How often does a young man holding deep politically related convictions change them upon taking a close look at the evidence with his own eyes? Not often. Larkin tells the story in his Independent column “Israel is a refuge, but a refuge under siege.” It’s a terrific (and brave) column. Larkin’s film is titled Forty Shades of Grey . The trailer is below. Via Israel Matzav . UPDATE: I think I have the video fixed.

A refuge under siege
IDF Blog Two photos tweeted in the past 24 hours, both allegedly depicting the results of Israeli air strikes in Gaza in recent days, have been proven false. 1. The photo first tweeted by Khulood Badawi (@KhuloodBadawi) and later by Diana Alzeer (@ManaraRam), allegedly depicting a Palestinian girl killed by an Israeli air strike yesterday, was proven to have originated in 2006 and to have had nothing at all to do with Israeli action. This photo is now the top tweet for #Gaza, with over 300 retweets. It is completely false. Badawi first tweeted the picture at noon on March 10, claiming it was linked to last night’s air strikes. Alzeer tweeted it on March 11, claiming the same. Both were refuted by tweeter Avi Mayer (@avimayer), who found that the photo dated back to 2009 at least. Further research revealed that the photo was taken in 2006 by Reuters, and that the girl, initially thought to have been killed in an Israeli air strike, was injured by falling off a swing. When confronted with this information, Alzeer stated that the photo was taken last night and forwarded to the press that day. UPDATE by SH: I followed this on twitter and naturally joined in to disprove the lie:

(Scott Johnson) On March 7 Canada’s Honorable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, has issued a statement on “Israeli Apartheid Week.” This short and remarkably forthright statement makes a point or two we have made here many times, but it is rare to see a government official make them: Like many Canadians I am concerned with the rise of anti-Israel activities on campuses across Canada, culminating in the so-called “Israeli Apartheid Week” (IAW), which is often promoted in a manner that disregards the rights and safety of Jewish students and professors. Universities are meant to offer an environment in which academic discourse can take place freely. Jewish faculty and students have the right to engage in this debate without feeling the need to conceal their identity, or to self-censor. The irony of this week cannot be overlooked. While singling out the only liberal democracy in the Middle East for condemnation, the organizers of IAW ignore Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad’s brutal slaughter of his own people and the suppression of basic human rights in many countries around the globe. Debate over Israeli policy is legitimate and encouraged through academic dialogue. However, there is a point at which well-intentioned debate is overrun by hatred and intolerance, creating a toxic environment that prevents meaningful dialogue on important issues from taking place. The organizers of Israeli Apartheid Week use the cover of academic freedom to demonize and delegitimize the State of Israel. In reality, this week is nothing more than an unbalanced attempt to paint Israel and her supporters as racist. This week runs contrary to Canadian values of tolerance, mutual respect, and understanding. As Minister for Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, I call on all Canadians to reject anti-Semitism and all forms of racism, discrimination and intolerance, which are unacceptable and completely contrary to Canada’s fundamental values. Thank you Minister Kenney. Minister Kenney’s statement shines a light on the appalling assault on Israel that is all the rage on college campuses around the world. To the irony that Minister Kenney notes let us add that Israel’s Arabs are afforded greater protection of their civil rights than the Arabs of any other Middle East country. Time to play Let’s Make a Deal? Am I the only one who thinks that the only thing wrong with this deal is the timing, assuming Maariv’s account is accurate? The US offered to give Israel advanced weaponry — including bunker-busting bombs and refueling planes — in exchange for Israel’s agreement not to attack Iranian nuclear sites, Israeli newspaper Maariv reported Thursday.
