CNN Asks Anti-Prop 8 Plaintiffs If They’re ‘Considered Heroes’

Posted by on Wednesday, 8 February, 2012

CNN host Randi Kaye was eager to provide same-sex marriage supporters with a stately platform on Wednesday afternoon. In her interview of the plaintiffs in the case to overturn California's ban on same-sex marriage (Proposition 8), she gleefully asked them about their wedding plans. Then Kaye teed them up again with this softball question: “Are you considered heroes by those who support same-sex marriage? What are you hearing from people?” At the end of the interview, the couple invited certain GOP opponents of same-sex marriage over to their house for a conversation on the matter. Kaye promised CNN would cover it and quickly added “And, we'll bring the meal.” [Video below the break.] Kaye did once ask them to respond to the opposition's claim that Proposition 8, which was passed by voters, was struck down by the courts. “And some of those say that, you know what, it's the voters' voices that need to be heard, not the courts,” Kaye stated. However, the rest of Kaye's interview oozed with sympathy for the couple. She asked them if they were “concerned” about the Republicans winning the presidential election, noting that “all the GOP candidates except Ron Paul support a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. Rick Santorum has actually said that he would actually nullify all existing same-sex marriages.” “So are you concerned at all, Paul, about the election later this year?” she asked one of her guests.

Barbara Walters: It’s ‘Heartbreaking’ to Force Women to View an Ultrasound Before an Abortion

Posted by on Wednesday, 8 February, 2012

The liberal women on The View, Wednesday, shrieked at the “totalitarian” decision by a Texas judge to uphold a law requiring women to look at an ultrasound before having an abortion. Co-host and journalist Barbara Walters found the legal ruling– and not the act of abortion itself– to be “heartbreaking.” [See video below. See MP3 audio here .] Regarding the ruling, left-wing comedienne Joy Behar spewed, ” It's very totalitarian in my opinion. I mean, it smacks of forcing somebody to confront something that they have already decided they don't want to deal with.” Rather than focus on the actual abortion, Walters lectured, ” Then to have to go and be forced to hear, to see the fetus, to hear the heartbeat, to put more guilt on you, I think is heartbreaking .” Walters continued, declaring that the decision to “give up a child that is obviously unwanted… is such a tremendous decision, it's involved with so much fear of what you're doing and guilt.” It was left up to token conservative Elisabeth Hasselbeck to make some obvious points, noting that if you were going to have “a cyst removed or tooth extracted…you would never go through any medical procedure without looking at an ultrasound, seeing an X-ray.”

Chris Matthews: Obama’s Smile ‘Worth Five to Ten Points’ on Election Day

Posted by on Monday, 6 February, 2012

To paraphrase Ronald Reagan, there he goes again. On MSNBC's Hardball Monday, host Chris Matthews said Barack Obama's smile “is worth five to ten points” on Election Day (video follows with transcript and commentary): CHRIS MATTHEWS: And finally, how does President Obama view the nasty Romney-Gingrich nomination fight? Well, in last night’s pre-game interview, Matt Lauer asked the President to size up how the race will affect the general election this November, and he had, Matt had a visual aid to help him. Let’s watch. (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) MATT LAUER: There's the cover of the New Yorker, the most recent New Yorker, and it has a picture of you watching the big game on TV. And there you are sitting there and up on screen it's not the Patriots and the Giants. It's Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich, same team, and they are pummeling each other. And look at the smile on your face there. Is art imitating life here? BARACK OBAMA: Well, you know, look, I've been through these primaries, they're tough…I think ultimately this will be forgotten by the time they make a decision on who their nominee is. And the American people are going to make a decision on my platform and where I want to take the country and where the Republican does. (END VIDEO CLIP) MATTHEWS: I think that smile of his is worth five to ten points in the general. They don't call him “Tingles” for nothing. Rachel Maddow Falsely Claims Santorum Wants States to be Able to Ban Contraception

Posted by on Sunday, 5 February, 2012

To paraphrase Ronald Reagan, there she goes again. On Sunday's Meet the Press , MSNBC's Rachel Maddow falsely claimed, “Rick Santorum says that he would like states to be able to make contraception illegal' (video follows with transcript and commentary): RACHEL MADDOW, MSNBC: The, the, the idea that, that, that the Catholic Church is being forced to do something that as a church it does not want to do is a misnomer. The initial exception in here is that the Catholic Church that–somebody that is providing the service of being a church, that's operating from the church, they're already exempt from this. The question is, as the congressman says, when you want to become a health insurance provider you must follow the rules of providing health insurance. And in this country, that means that you have to cover contraception, and 80 percent of Americans agree with that. ALEX CASTELLANOS, REPUBLICAN STRATEGIST: This is–this… MADDOW: This fits into–you guys want to make this only about religion, but listen, Mitt Romney is campaigning… CASTELLANOS: No, it is–no, the administration made this only about religion. MADDOW: …Mitt Romney is campaigning saying that he would like to end–he… CASTELLANOS: Ask the bishops. MADDOW: …he would like to end all family planning support at the federal level. He would like to eliminate federal–Title 10. Rick Santorum says that he would like states to be able to make contraception illegal. You can try to make this an issue of, oh, Democrats hate religion, but the fact is churches were exempt from this from the beginning, this is about providing health insurance. And the Republican Party is… DAVID GREGORY, HOST: Let me… MADDOW: …waging war on contraception at this point in a way that the–where the–and that's where the discussion is going. Is this even close to true? Not according to the Washington Post's Melinda Henneberger who interviewed Santorum on January 6 about this very subject: “I was asked if I believed in it, and I said, ‘No, I’m a Catholic, and I don’t.’ I don’t want the government to fund it through Planned Parenthood, but that’s different than wanting to ban it; the idea I’m coming after your birth control is absurd. I was making a statement about my moral beliefs, but I won’t impose them on anyone else in this case. I don’t think the government should be involved in that. People are free to make their own decisions.’’ The former Pennsylvania senator recently told ABC’s Jake Tapper that, yes, he disagrees with Griswold v. Connecticut, the 1965 Supreme Court decision that struck down a ban on contraception. He said Friday evening that it’s the idea that states don’t have a right to pass such a law that he opposes, because he does not see the right to privacy as a constitutional right envisioned by its signers. This is hardly a new argument. “It could have been a law against buying shoestrings; that it was contraception has nothing to do with it. States have the right to pass even dumb laws.” To be clear, he does think that laws banning birth control would be dumb “for a number of reasons. Birth control should be legal in the United States. The states should not ban it, and I would oppose any effort to ban it.’’ That bears repeating: “Birth control should be legal in the United States. The states should not ban it, and I would oppose any effort to ban it.” Seem pretty clear to you? Wouldn't it be nice if people like Maddow would tell the truth when they're on national television, or is that asking too much? ” Tell the Truth! ” 2012 (H/T NB reader zenman1661) Associate Editor’s note: As you are likely aware, since the financial collapse of 2008, charities and non-profit organizations have seen a sharp reduction in donations. Matthews Dismisses Mitchell’s Defense of Bush 41 Over Scanner Non-Gaffe

Posted by on Sunday, 5 February, 2012

It's astonishing that someone whose profession is to talk politics still has not heard that the alleged gaffe of President George H.W. Bush being unaware of the existence of checkout scanners as he visited a grocery store during the 1988 campaign has been disputed, as the veteran MSNBC host repeated the alleged Bush gaffe while opening his syndicated Chris Matthews Show which aired on Sunday. After guest Andrea Mitchell of NBC tried to correct him, he was still unconvinced and declared, “I'm still not letting him off on that.”

CNN’s John King Calls Mitt Romney ‘Governor Mormon’

Posted by on Sunday, 5 February, 2012

John King had an unfortunate slip of the tongue during CNN's coverage of the Nevada caucuses Saturday. While discussing how the various religious groups voted for the different Republican presidential candidates, King called Mitt Romney “Governor Mormon” (video follows with transcript and commentary): JOHN KING: Now, two states in a row have said Governor Romney and here in Nevada tonight, by a huge margin. Let's just look at one more as we come down the line here. If you look here among faith, obviously Governor Mormon is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He's a Mormon, and he won big among Mormons. He won 9 out of every 10 votes among Mormons. Congressman Paul coming in second place. But he also won those who say they have no religion, voted for Congressman Paul. But others Christians, Mormons, Catholics, Mainline Protestants, all going for Governor Romney. This is a sweep across the electorate tonight. Some would say, well, it was a state he won in 2008, so what, who cares? But the point, beginning February with a win and a big win, starts the process in which team Romney thinks they could run the entire month, perhaps losing in Maine to Ron Paul. The psychology is going to kick in at some point. As the folks at Mediaite observed, oops! Saturday Night Funny Video: Woman Scolds Local TV Reporter: ‘Total, Complete Killjoy’

Posted by on Sunday, 5 February, 2012

Not everybody appreciates live local TV reporting. When an unusual snowstorm hit Seattle a few weeks ago, the local NBC affiliate sent a reporter to cover people sledding on city streets. And, as caught by ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live , some hilarity ensued in the reaction of one displeased woman holding an inner tube. “Sometimes when covering the dangers of sledding and cars on slick roads,” FNC’s Bret Baier explained in setting up the clip on the January 20 Special Report , “it’s not just the cars that are the danger.”

CNN Host Asks How Any Nevada Voter Can ‘Connect’ With Romney – Though Poll Shows Him Ahead by 20 Points

Posted by on Friday, 3 February, 2012

While Mitt Romney is polling strong in Nevada – as her own network had reported – CNN's Ashleigh Banfield still questioned how anyone in the state could “connect” with him over his laissez-faire approach to the foreclosure crisis. Banfield's question came at the bottom of the 1 p.m. hour of Friday's Newsroom. The CNN host dismissed Romney's free market solution as hurtful to his own campaign, as if Nevada voters might not support such a remedy for the housing market. [Video below the break. Click here for audio.] “[H]ow is it that anybody in Nevada, conservative or not, could connect with Mitt Romney when he says something about foreclosures to this effect?” Banfield asked on Friday afternoon before playing a clip of Romney saying the crisis needs to “run its course and hit the bottom” before bouncing back up. “Ouch,” she exclaimed when the clip ended. “I know Republicans and really strong conservatives like the free market economy, but I'm not so sure they like it when it applies to their home and they're underwater. How is this going to play in Nevada?” she asked, dismissing the free market conservative solution to Nevada's housing woes. However, Banfield could easily have asked how Nevadans can “connect” with President Obama over his government-heavy solution to the housing market, given that their unemployment and foreclosure problems are happening under his watch. And GOP guest Gentry Collins pointed to the polls that Romney actually doing well in Nevada. Banfield's own network, three hours earlier, reported Romney ahead in Nevada by 20 points according to a Las Vegas Review-Journal poll . A transcript of the segment, which aired on February 3 at 1:33 p.m. EST, is as follows: ASHLEIGH BANFIELD: One in 75 properties in Nevada is in foreclosure and unemployment in that state is 12.6 percent. So how is it that anybody in Nevada, conservative or not, could connect with Mitt Romney when he says something about foreclosures to this effect? Have a listen. (Video Clip) MITT ROMNEY, Republican presidential candidate: Don't try and stop the foreclosure process. Let it run its course and hit the bottom. Allow investors to buy homes. Put renters in them. Fix the homes up and let it turn around and come back up. (End Video Clip)

M-BS-NBC: Martin Bashir Falsely Claims Obama Created 3 Million Private Sector Jobs

Posted by on Friday, 3 February, 2012

It certainly is no surprise the Obama-loving media are doing a jubilant victory lap over the stronger than expected headline figures in Friday's unemployment report. Also not at all shocking was MSNBC's Martin Bashir falsely claiming on the show bearing his name Friday, “Under this president over three million private sector jobs have been created” (video follows with transcript and commentary): “If I may just interrupt you for a moment, under this president over three million private sector jobs have been created.”

Piers Morgan Begs Jerry Springer to Run for Office

Posted by on Friday, 3 February, 2012

A week after he pushed liberal actor Alec Baldwin to enter politics, CNN's Piers Morgan lauded Jerry Springer and told him to “Get into politics.” Apparently, Piers Morgan Tonight has become a place to encourage liberal celebrities to run for office.
